Connecting Via a Time Code Translator.
If you are connecting the PC to a time code only source the procedure is as follows:
1. Be sure that the PC and the VTR are turned off. This will reduce your chances of shorting something out. There actually is DC power in any serial port.
2. Connect the one end of the 9 or 25 pin serial cable that you will be using to the serial port on your PC. Connect the other end to the TC translation device. Connect the TC output from your video deck to the audio input of the translation device. (This is usually an RCA connector.)
3. If the translation device requires external power, be sure that it is plugged in to AC power or has batteries.
4. Turn on the PC, Translation device and the Video deck and Run Log This®.
5. If you are using a device that communicates with a protocol other than standard SONY tm, select the Protocol from the Settings menu then choose the one you want. *Note: Log This® currently supports both the Telcom Research® protocol and the Addenda® protocol.
6. From the Settings menu select Com ports, then choose the port number that your translator is connected to. If you are not sure which port you are connected to here are some tips. Unless you have changed any factory settings in your PC, most computers assign port numbers 1 and 2 to the serial ports on the PC. Usually there is a 9 pin serial port and a 25 pin serial port. More often than not the 9 pin is port 1 and the 25 pin is port 2. Many laptop computers have only one serial port on the back, this is also normally assigned to port 1.
7. Once you choose the port, you should see the port number appear next to the time code window and you should see all the Log This® VTR buttons change from disabled to enabled. *Note: Some translation devices will not respond with the appropriate codes to enable the VTR buttons in Log This®. This should not present a problem as long as the port number has changed and you are receiving TC. If you are having problems with this process see the Trouble shooting section.
