Connecting Via RS-422
If you are going to be connecting directly to the serial control connector on a VTR the process is as follows:
1. Be sure that the PC and the VTR are turned off. This will reduce your chances of shorting something out. There actually is DC power in any serial port.
2. Connect the RS-232 to RS-422 adapter to the end of the 9 or 25 pin serial cable that you will be using. Make sure that the RS-232 end of the adapter is the end that will plug into the PC. It won't work if the adapter is backwards. (The adapter cables that we sell have the adapter integrated into the end of the cable and are marked which end connects to which device.)
3. Plug the adapter into the PC serial port and the other end of the cable into the VTR control connector.
4. Turn on the PC and the VTR and Run Log This®.
5. From the Settings menu select Com ports, then choose the port number that your adapter is connected to. If you are not sure which port you are connected to here are some tips. Unless you have changed any factory settings in your PC, most computers assign port numbers 1 and 2 to the serial ports on the PC. Usually there is a 9 pin serial port and a 25 pin serial port. More often than not the 9 pin is port 1 and the 25 pin is port 2. Many laptop computers have only one serial port on the back, this is also normally assigned to port 1.
6. Once you choose the port, you should see the port number appear next to the time code window and you should see all the Log This® VTR buttons change from disabled to enabled. If you are having problems with this process see the Trouble shooting section.
*Note: Some VTRs may require a special connector for the connection to a PC. The SONY DVR-2 for example has a 15 pin connector. If you have any questions please contact us.
