Video Connection Troubleshooting

There are a number of different issues you may encounter when trying to connect to a video source, or watch the video preview on the screen while logging. Here are a few of the more common things you might deal with.

I click on "Connect to Video" and get an error message saying... "No video devices found." This is typically due to one of two things. The first is that the capture device may need to be initialized by the software that the manufacturer provided. Try running that software first, closing the software without disconnecting the video connection, and see if that works. If you see the video when you run that software, it should work here. (Remember that you will need to do this whenever you turn off your computer or disconnect the video device.)
The second possibility is that the video capture device is not Windows AVI compliant. You should consult the technical information that came with your capture device if you suspect this. (Most IE-13394 Firewire cards are not AVI compliant because they lack analog capabilities.)

Once I connect to a video source my computer runs really slow and the TC only seems to show about every 10th frame. This is quite common in computers that have less than a 1 ghz. processor and less than 256 meg of RAM or have no video RAM. We recommend that you close the video window and watch the "live" video on an external video monitor instead. This usually clears up the problem immediately. (As long as you don't close the video connection, closing the video window will have no impact on your ability to grab thumbnail images.)

Everything works great except I intermittently seem to loose deck control. Again, the solution to this is the same as the one listed above. Simply close the video window and the problem should go away.

Whenever I run Log This
® I have to go back and set the video settings again. Most of the video settings are determined by your video capture device. You should run the software that came with it to see if there is a way to change the startup defaults.
